Classes: We hold classes and events year ‘round and every three months offer a new season. Our various regional class locations throughout Northern Illinois each have a weeknight where demonstration classes are held 7-9 p.m. every other week. We are interviewing new locations for Chicago, Northwest and West suburbs.
Kids/Teens, Hands-on, and Healthy classes are held on weekend mornings. Singles classes are held monthly on a Thursday evening 7-9 p.m., with a party afterwards. LGBT classes will be held monthly on an evening to be determined.
Each location has its own class page with a map, and listings of class dates and times, chef-instructor, dishes to be taught, and a email link for registration.
To encourage a quality and pleasant experience for everyone, we ask that cell phones and beepers are turned off during each class and event. We also ask that no talking while the chef is teaching. Recipe sheets and eating utensils are provided. A cash bar is available before, during class breaks, and after each class. During outdoor classes, drinks are available during classes as well. We also feature complimentary wine pairings of each dish at evening classes by a local wine store.
Membership: All memberships enable considerable savings and a lower registration rate for each class, all events, including wine dinners, day trips, and other excursions. Members also receive Member-Only E-nnouncements with class and event changes, and invitations to member-only events. A list is being developed with discounts to area restaurants, meat and seafood markets, and various entertainment, and services. A membership application that requests agreement of our terms of operation is required for every membership. CLASS & EVENT REGISTRATION: Advance registration and payment is required 7 days prior to any class or event.
Advance Registration Rates for Classes and Events: Registration made within 7 days of any class, if seating is available, are subject to a $10 late fee. Advance Registration: $30 per member for evening kids/teens, singles, and healthy classes. $40 per nonmember. $125 per member for four-hour hands-on classes unless otherwise noted in class description. $140 per nonmember. Note: Parents with two or more children/teens are elgible for family discounts. See discounts at each class listing or call for assistance.
How to Register: 1. Use Email registration link by each class, event and daytrip. 2. Payment: Mail your check to us, payable to The W.A. Lavery Co., 3323 W. Addison St., Unit B14, Chicago, IL 60618-4303. You will then receive a confirmation via email the same day your check is received.
Refunds and Best Chefs Credits: There are NO refunds provided for any class, event, or daytrip. We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule a class or event due to insufficient registrations, chef's illness, or weather and to change class locations. Registrants automatically receive a Best Chefs Credit. We are very liberal about cut off dates. If you need to cancel, we will provide a Best Chefs Credit if you notify us within 5 days of a class or event due to the food ordering process. If we need to reschedule a class, everyone is required to re-register for the new date to confirm that they wish to attend the new date. Simply use "class credit" if already paid.
One-year memberships are available in the following categories (select one):
Single Membership: One person can join for $15 for one year, and pay in advance for a minimum of two $30 Best Chefs Class Credits which are good for 12 months from the day of purchase ($75.00). Additional class credits can be purchased as needed.
Family Membership: two or more persons can join from the same residence for $25 for one year, and pay in advance for four $30 Best Chefs Class Credits which are good for 12 months from the day of purchase ($145.00). Additional class credits can be purchased as needed.
Senior Membership: Single Membership: One senior (55+) can join for $10 for one year, and pay in advance for two $30 Best Chefs Class Credits for one senior. Senior Family Membership: Two or more seniors from the same address can join for $10 for one year, and pay in advance for four $30 Best Chefs Class Credits in a family membership. All Class Credits are good for 12 months from the day of purchase. Additional class credits can be purchased as needed.
Student Membership: This membership is intended for a single student that is not part of a family membership. One student (enrolled in a high school, college, or trade school) can join for $10 for one year, and pay in advance for two $30 class credits which are good for 12 months from the day of purchase ($70.00). Additional class credits can be purchased as needed.U.S.
Armed Services Membership: This membership is intended for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts and their spouses who can join for $1 for one year, and pay in advance for two $30 class credits which are good for 12 months from the day of purchase ($61.00). Additional class credits can be purchased as needed.
Our Demonstration Classes: Our classes are quite different from other demonstration classes taught throughout the Midwest. The chef does not lecture the class, but teaches our host/hostess one-on-one under a mirror system. Questions are held until the end of each dish demonstration. Seeing a dish taught without any interruptions is a great help in remembering details when you make the dish for the first time yourself. Feel free to ask as many questions as you like during our question-and-answer session following each dish. A hearty sample is served, and a local wine store provides a wine pairing for each dish. Usually three or more dishes are taught at each evening class. Bring a clipboard to our demonstration classes to write notes on the recipe sheets provided. We encourage students to call us 7 days a week for questions and assistance with any dish.
Our Hands-on Classes: Our hands-on classes are limited to 13 persons to enable the chef can to spend more time with each person. The class description, and a followup email once you register, will list what equipment to bring with you to class. The chef will provide all the food. You’ll leave with servings for two or more of each dish -- so bring good sized containers with ice packs! Some hands-on classes permit a discount for a couple which will be indicated in the class information.
Kids Classes: Parents must attend all classes with children under the age of 17. Each adult and child are charged the same rate per person. We provide discounts to families with two or more children/teens. We're pretty liberal about ages. If your child is well behaved, feel comfortable to register them. We've had children as young as 5 years attend. If adults find a particular kids/teens class interesting, they may also register without a kid, and are welcome to attend.
Special Dietary Requirements and Disclaimer: Notify us at least five days in advance of any class or event if you or your guests have special dietary needs. We will make every effort to substitute a food item with a suitable replacement, when we can, and do not assume any responsibility if an attendee consumes a food item for which they are allergic.
Gift Certificates: We will be happy to work with your budget and customize a personal gift certificate for you, scan and email it to you or the recipient. Helpful Suggestions: Avoid missing a sold out class and register at the beginning of each new three-month season for classes and events you wish to attend. Bring a clipboard to class to record notes on the recipe sheets. While all seats are good with our mirror system, come early and order a drink and meet some friendly foodies, like yourself.
